The Chief Executive Officer, Focus on Disability Foundation UK, with functional branches in Nigeria, Ghana among others, Mr. Abiodun Enilari Paseda, has called on the Nigeria government to come to the aid of people living with disabilities even as the COVID-19 pandemic is ravaging the world without exception.

Noting that Coronavirus has become the greatest global health emergency in recent times just as its ripples reverberate far and wide across the universe, Mr Paseda said that the very poor in the society as well as those living with disabilities are the hardest hit, and as a result need the urgent attention of the Federal Government through the Presidential Task Force, Coalition Against COVID-19, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs among others to live a meaningful life.

Paseda made the call while supervising by proxy the distribution of palliatives to some homes of disabled people. He said ‘these people need more than we are giving or can give, and so the government has to come in before things get out of hand’.

He said: “Though the government have introduced measures like maintenance of hygiene through mandatory washing of hands, closure of borders thereby restricting travels in and out of the country, wearing of masks to cover noses, mouths and in some cases, eyes to preventing the droplets that transmit the virus as well as social distancing and stay home policy, a lot still has to be done to help the Nigerian populace, especially the disabled, to keep safe.”

It is worth knowing that the situation in Nigeria is growing more critical on a daily basis, with  the numbers expected to rise dramatically in the coming weeks though the numbers of people affected so far has been relatively few or far much less than in the Europe or the USA. At  the moment, a total of 4787 cases have been reported with 158 deaths while 959 people have recovered and discharged.
Further in his address, Paseda observed that the virus has the potential to spread at an alarming rate among the poorest and people with disabilities because they are the most vulnerable.
“It will hit them the hardest unless they urgently receive emergency supplies, social protection, medical treatment and food relief packages,” Paseda said.
